Saskatchewan is famous for its skies, flat landscape and harsh climate. However, for people who choose to live there, it is much more than that. For the short film, “A Moment of Silence”, I wanted to create a short narrative documenting why I love Saskatchewan and why I love heading out to explore its vast landscape. Not only is it extremely diverse, it offers many options for outdoor activities throughout the seasons.
With the recent release of the Kessler CineDrive system, I wanted to release a new short film that utilizes some of the features of the system.
For this video, I wanted to take a quick look at the Kessler CineDrive System and show how I accomplished some of the shots in the short film. A Moment of Silence is my first short film using the CineDrive system so I wanted to explore how I could use it in my workflow. Being able to control multiple axis beyond the standard three, including focus and zoom, opens up many possibilities.
In the video attached above, I show how to connect, calibrate, and program a move. By no means does this video show everything the system can do, rather, it gives a first look at what the Kessler CineDrive is capable of. Special thanks to Nils Sorensen for helping with the BTS video!
This video was shot on location in Saskatchewan, Canada. Special thanks to Nils Sorensen for helping film this video.

This is the motion component of the recent Karst Country exhibition shown at the BAC in Canberra, Australia. It features the limestone landscapes near Wee Jasper NSW. While most of the footage is time-lapse there are also some sections of both normal and slow motion footage.
This work was created with James van der Moezel.
This is only a very short section of a much larger project - in scope, duration and resolution (4K) that we are currently working on.
The edit and music on this version were influenced by the unique constraints of public display in the specific gallery space - as well as the specific theme of the exhibition and it's other elements. The evolution of this project will see a final completed piece which will probably vary somewhat in its content and music. We are just starting on this really - and this is the start of the start.
Technical stuff : RED Scarlet / Epic cams... Nikon glass ... IR filters (R72) ... CS6. Music by David Lawrence.
Note: some BTS, location and exhibition shots on the first three pages here - glenryan.tumblr.com/ - kinda outlines the whole project :)
For more on the Karst Country exhibition's other prints and paintings - see karstcountry.com

"Ever since I saw it last June it has haunted my thoughts like almost no other film this year, short or feature... a poetic sci-fi at its very best."
- Ben Umstead, Twitchfilm.net
Synopsis:
The abstract story about a lone survivor lost in a dying world. A man struggles to connect pieces from his daily scavenging routine and bits from his repressed memory. When a woman appears in his desolate forest world, she's intent on making him face his past and consequent fate.

From the frigid North with Alaska's best bush pilots to the sheer granite walls of Mt Bute with Dean Potter, Reel Water Productions told some incredible stories in 2012. When most crews would have wraped, we pushed beyond. Story telling remained our passion. Small, insanley motivated crews became our tactic. Shooting on Red Epic, Sony F3, Cineflex and Phantom, digital cinema was the focus. Our client list grew. Our creativity soared. Here is our year in review.

Juan Gusta ( John Lyke ) is the principal of Bayside High School and the show's resident authority figure. However, when he attended high school, he was an anti-authority hippie whom, in one episode, Jessie describes as "The Mike Dempsey of the '60s". According to an old copy of the school paper, he once mooned the school board. He once mentioned that had he been allowed to return for a fourth tour of duty, "the war would've been won in a week". He is known for his catchphrase, "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey! What is going on here?" as well as his high-pitched laugh. Lyke has frequent run-ins with Mike and his friends as either a foe to be outwitted or a friend to turn to for help. Despite being a responsible authority figure, Mr. Belding is unique as he genuinely seems to care what his students, particularly Mike, think of him.

Nick Taylor is a school nerd. Nick has been tagging along with Mike since they were in elementary school and is extremely loyal to him. In exchange for doing Mike's homework and being roped into Mike's various stunts, Nick receives protection from school bullies and a general boost in his confidence; but Mike's affection for Nick is evident in spite of this. Nick is very comfortable with his geekiness and fancies himself a ladies' man. The rest of the gang simultaneously picks on and humors Nick for his eccentricities (e.g. hiding in his locker, wearing extremely loud and mismatched clothes, and obsessing over science and chess).

Mike Waffle Dempsey is often referred to as "Preppy" by his friend KC Skater. He is a charming schemer who often breaks the fourth wall by addressing the audience, sometimes temporarily freezing all of the characters around him in the process by calling, "Time out!" Zack's schemes, though amusing, often backfire, resulting in unexpected outcomes.

KC Skater (Casey Geraghty on school tests) is the "jock" of the group. An army brat, he was an outsider, having transferred to Bayside High School. KC mentions that he has been to Bolivia, Italy, Iceland, and Berlin among other places. He becomes the school's star athlete, excelling as a wrestler and the quarterback of the football team. A common theme occurs when Jessie constantly bickers with KC over his insensitive remarks, particularly about women. His real name is " Kenneth Castleton III", but the meaning of the abbreviation "KC" periodically served as comedic fodder during the show's run.
